SUEZ Supports Shanghai to Pioneer a “Waste-free Marathon” Paving the Way Towards a Greener Future

On 16 March, the Shanghai Bay Area Half Marathon kicked off at Binhai Park in Jinshan District. As an official partner of the event, SUEZ collaborated with the host, Jinshan District People’s Government of Shanghai, to integrate the principles of the circular economy throughout the event towards a zero waste event. Leveraging its advanced technology and extensive expertise in water and waste management, SUEZ helped create a successful sustainable sporting event, underscoring its commitment to corporate social responsibility and contribution to the city’s ecological transformation.

From the Track to the Recycling Chain: Closing the “Waste-Free” Loop

The Shanghai Bay Area Half Marathon, spanning 21.0975 kilometres, attracted 4,800 runners to participate. Through its systematic approach, SUEZ has designed a full-lifecycle circular chain to achieve 100% closed-loop management, thus minimising the environmental footprint of the race. Plastic bottles collected at the event are transported to SUEZ’s post-consumer plastics collection and sorting centre for processing. The centre, equipped with cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced information systems, enables a smart, digitalised, and low-carbon recovery process with traceability, embodying the “from recycling to regeneration” resource circularity concept.

SUEZ’s circular solutions and practices have been expanded from France to China . Since 2023, SUEZ has been a title sponsor of the women’s Tour de France cycling team FDJ-SUEZ and supports the ecological transition of this emblematic race. Shanghai and Guangxi were two key stops on the team’s global tour in 2023. Supporting the Shanghai Bay Area Half Marathon is a new example of SUEZ's commitment to developing sustainable practices in sport.
